چکیده

BACKGROUND The LMA Protector™ is the latest CE marked single use supraglottic airway device. This airway device provides access and functional separation of the respiratory and digestive tracts. There are two ports (male, female ports) to provide suction in the laryngeal region and insertion of the gastric tube. The aim of our study is to assess the ease of use, airway quality, device positioning, airway leak and complications associated with initial clinical experience in LMA Protector™ usage. METHODS This is an initial investigation of LMA Protector™ airway device. We conducted a preliminary assessment in the anaesthetised women who underwent minor gynaecological procedures with spontaneous ventilation in order to evaluate the performance of the airway device. RESULTS Insertion was successful on first and second attempts in 23 (88.5%) and 3 (11.5%) respectively. Median [IQR (range)] insertion time was 19 [17-21(14-58)] seconds. Airway leak pressure was 25.5 [23-29(21-30] cmH2O. On fibreoptic examination via the device, vocal cords were visible in all 26 patients. There were no alternative airway use or airway manipulations required during maintenance of anaesthesia. Six patients had sore throat 24 h after procedures and there was no dysphagia or hoarseness. CONCLUSION This pilot study of the LMA protector shows that the device is easily inserted with fast insertion time, providing a reliable and adequate airway seal. TRIAL REGISTRATION Clinicaltrials.gov Registration NCT02531256 . Retrospectively registered on August 21, 2015.

Laryngeal mask airway protector™: Advanced uses for laparoscopic cholecystectomies

The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) Protector™ is a second-generation perilaryngeal sealer type supraglottic airway device recently introduced into clinical practice. We describe our initial experiences with the use of the LMA Protector™ in three patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomies. In all patients, we found the LMA Protector™ to have acceptable placements on the first attempt, adequ...

Randomized crossover comparison between the i-gel and the LMA-Unique in anaesthetized, paralysed adults.

BACKGROUND The i-gel differs from other supraglottic airway devices, in that it has a softer, non-inflatable cuff. This study was designed to compare the performance of the i-gel and the LMA-Unique (LMA-U) when used during anaesthesia in paralysed patients. METHODS Both devices were studied in 39 anaesthetized, paralysed patients in a randomized crossover trial. The primary outcome was airway...

Influence of neuromuscular block, mode of ventilation and respiratory cycle on pharyngeal mucosal pressures with the laryngeal mask airway.

We tested the hypothesis that the pressure exerted by the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) against the pharyngeal mucosa varied with neuromuscular block, mode of ventilation and the respiratory cycle. We studied 20 anaesthetized adult patients. Microchip sensors were attached to a size 5 LMA at locations approximately corresponding to the base of the tongue, hypopharynx, lateral pharynx, oropharynx,...

Radiation Exposure and Bell’s Palsy: A Hypothetical Association

Bell’s palsy is an idiopathic peripheral nerve palsy involving the facial nerve. It accounts for 60 to 75% of all cases of unilateral facial paralysis. The main mechanisms to induce BP remain unclear, but infection, ischemic condition and immunodeficiency may contribute to the development of Bell’s palsy. Accumulating evidence has shown several factors can trigger the reactivation of latent...

The laryngeal mask airway Supreme--a single use laryngeal mask airway with an oesophageal vent. A randomised, cross-over study with the laryngeal mask airway ProSeal in paralysed, anaesthetised patients.

The LMA Supreme is a new extraglottic airway device which brings together features of the LMA ProSeal, Fastrach and Unique. We test the hypothesis that ease of insertion, oropharyngeal leak pressure, fibreoptic position and ease of gastric tube placement differ between the LMA ProSeal and the LMA Supreme in paralysed anesthetised patients. Ninety-three females aged 19-71 years were studied. Bot...
